GPA Calculation Formula
According to VIT's academic regulations, GPA and CGPA are calculated using the following formulas:
Semester GPA Formula:
Cumulative GPA (CGPA) Formula:
Important Notes:
- F grades (Failed) and N grades (Incomplete) carry zero grade points but are counted in total credits
- If a course is failed and later repeated, only the latest grade is considered
- Audit courses (U), withdrawn courses (W), and Pass-Fail courses (P) are not included in CGPA calculations
- The final CGPA is rounded to two decimal places
Example Calculation
Scenario: Student's performance over two semesters
Semester 1:
Course | Credits | Grade | Grade Point | Credit × Grade Point |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mathematics | 4 | A | 9 | 36 |
Programming | 3 | S | 10 | 30 |
Chemistry | 4 | B | 8 | 32 |
English | 2 | A | 9 | 18 |
Physics Lab | 1 | S | 10 | 10 |
Total Credits: 14 | Total Credit Points: 126 | GPA = 9.00 |
Semester 2:
Course | Credits | Grade | Grade Point | Credit × Grade Point |
---|---|---|---|---|
Data Structures | 3 | A | 9 | 27 |
Physics | 4 | B | 8 | 32 |
Economics | 3 | C | 7 | 21 |
Programming Lab | 2 | S | 10 | 20 |
Technical Writing | 1 | A | 9 | 9 |
Total Credits: 13 | Total Credit Points: 109 | GPA = 8.38 |
CGPA Calculation:
CGPA = (Total Credit Points from all semesters) / (Total Credits from all semesters)
CGPA = (126 + 109) / (14 + 13)
CGPA = 235 / 27
CGPA = 8.70
